Sweet pea ( Lathyrus odoratus )

The sweet pea ( Lathyrus odoratus ) is a flowering plant in the genus of grass pea ( Lathyrus ) in the legume family ( Fabaceae ). As an ornamental plant, it is called " Sweet Pea ", " Sweet Pea " or " sweet pea ".

Features

The sweet pea is an annual climbing plant, which reaches stature heights of 80 to 160 centimeters. The stem is hairy and distinctly winged. The leaves are pinnate. There is a terminal tendril at the feathery leaves. Each sheet just a few leaflets, when present, are ovate - elliptic, 2-6 cm long and 7-30 mm wide. The stipules are 1.5 to 2.5 inches long.

The racemose inflorescence is usually two to siebenblütig, rarely flowered. The hermaphrodite, zygomorphe flower ( butterfly flower) smells strong. The cup is 10 to 11 millimeters long. The calyx teeth are almost as long as the calyx tube. The crown is white, pink, purple, purple or blue and 2 to 3.5 inches long. The flowering period extends from June to September.

The hairy legume is 5 to 7 inches long, 10 to 12 millimeters wide and contains eight seeds.

The species has the chromosome number 2n = 14

Occurrence

The sweet pea grows wild in Southern Italy and North-West Africa before on dry slopes.

Use

The sweet pea is widely used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as cut flowers. It is in culture since the beginning of the 18th century. There are numerous varieties with different growth, number and color of the flowers, the crown is purple, pink, blue, white or multi-colored. Spencer varieties have rich flowering inflorescences.
