History

The National Museum was founded in 1898 in a newly built, open castle-like building by Gustav Gull north- west of the main hall of the station at the present site Spitz Park in Zurich. Zurich had won with the project " fairytale castle " a competition against other Swiss cities. The building combines various architectural styles and is therefore controversial since its inception. However, the Federal Commission on Monuments and commented in an opinion of 27 November 1997 with the following words: "With the national museum as individual construction Gustav Gull respond architecturally accurate to the task. The chosen form of a " medieval castle " reflects history and makes the complex easily recognizable as a museum. The construction of national history is an essential counterweight to the central station, then as now the crossroads of the progressive, looking to the future public transport. With its central courtyard, the system opens the park of the place Spitz, they closes sharply toward the city. With consistent structure around the central courtyard and the entrance courtyard, with a tight floor plan design, which deliberately uses exceptional situations and with striking vertical accents, the museum is realized powerful expression of self-conscious Federal State. » The architect perpetuated under construction by his initials according to for the plan a "G" chose.
