Sylacauga is an American city in Alabama. It is located in Talladega County, and in 2000 had 12,616 inhabitants in the census.
The first documented case in which a person was hit and injured by an object from outer space, took place here. On 30 November 1954, a 4 kg heavy meteorite crashed through the roof of a house, bounced on a radio and caused to Ann Hodges substantial wounds.
Geography

History
The first known inhabitants of the area in the valley of the Coosa River were Indians of the tribe of the Creek. Sylacauga was first mentioned in 1540 in the records of Hernando de Soto. The name is composed of two Indian words together - " Chalaka - ge", which means "The Place of Chalaka tribe ". The city was first incorporated in 1838 as Syllacoga and then again in 1887 as Sylacauga. Sylacauga, " The Marble City", is located on one of the toughest and brightest upcoming marble fields in the world. This has a length of about 50 km and is about two miles wide and about 120 meters thick.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, there were 12,616 people, the city Sylacauga. The population density was 262.9 people per km ². There were 5748 housing units at an average 119.8 per km ². The population consisted of Sylacaugas 69.17 % White, 28.91 % African American, 0.26 % Native American, 0.29 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander, 0.40 % reported other races to belong and 0.91 % from two or more races. 0.97 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Residents Sylacaugas distributed to 5215 households out of which 30.1% were living in children under 18 years. 46.3 % married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4 % were non-families. 31.7% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 15.5 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size is 3.00.
The city population was spread out with 25.0 % under the, 8.3 % 18 -24- year-old, 25.9 % 25 -44- year-old, 22.2% 45-64 year olds and 18.6 % under the age of 65 years or more. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 81.3 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women 77.0 males.
