Sylvain Côté

Sylvain Côté ( born January 19, 1966 in Quebec City, Quebec ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who during his active career, 1984-2002, among other things for the Hartford Whalers, Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League played at the position of the defender.

Career

Côté first played at the Sainte -Foy governor before joining the Quebec Remparts in 1982 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. There, the defender spent two seasons and came to 34 points in his rookie season on 65 points in the following. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1984 in the first round in eleventh position of the Hartford Whalers. Equal to the 1984/85 season Côté managed the leap into the National Hockey League and came in 67 games for use. For the season 1985/86 the defender also started in the professional field, but was sent in the QMJHL after a few missions again. There he came in the Hull Olympiques used, with whom he won the Coupe du Président at the end of the season. He also received a nomination in First All-Star team in the league and has won the Trophée Émile Bouchard the best defensive player in the regular season as well as the Trophée Guy Lafleur for the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs, he got together with his teammate Luc Robitaille excellent. Subsequently, the Olympiques were playing in the tournament for the Memorial Cup.

From the 1986/87 season was one Côté - with the exception of twelve missions in the farm team, the Binghamton Whalers of the American Hockey League - to the permanent staff in Hartford. This was 1990/91 collection, until the end of the season. Only in the 1989/90 season he missed because of injury much of the Games. In September 1991, eventually parted ways the Whalers and the defender. In exchange for the Russian striker Andrei Nikolischin he moved to the Washington Capitals. When team from the U.S. capital, he was able to increase its yield point clearly and played until the end of March 1998 there. Under the Trade Deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs secured the services of defender. For Côté Jeff Brown moved to Washington.

In Toronto, the Canadian only one and a half years, but they were very successful with reaching the play-off semi-final in the 1998/99 season spent. In October 1999, Côté is for a second-round vote in NHL Entry Draft 2001 to the Chicago Blackhawks. But for the Blackhawks, he completed just 45 games since he was released in February 2000 along with Dave Manson to the reigning Stanley Cup winner and new championship favorite Dallas Stars. In exchange, Kevin Dean, Derek Plante and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2001 changed to Chicago.

With the Dallas defender reached the finals series for the Stanley Cup, where the team in the best- of-seven series in six games to the New Jersey Devils defeated and thus missed the title defense. After 28 season and 23 playoff games the time but was again terminated at the Texans. As an Unrestricted Free Agent Côté returned to the Washington Capitals, where he spent two more complete seasons. After just one use in the 2002/03 season the Capitals broke the contract with him, and he was no longer new team and ended his career.

Internationally

Côté represented his native Canada at the Junior World Championships in 1984 and 1986. According to a fourth place finish at the 1984 World Cup two years later he won the silver medal and was appointed to the All- Star team of the tournament.

At the World Cup of Hockey 1996 - his only appearance at the National Seniors - denied the defender two games for the maple leaves and prepared a hit before. After two losses in the best- of-three series against the United States, he won the silver medal with the team.
