Sylvia Steiner
Sylvia Helena de Figueiredo Steiner ( born January 19, 1953 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian lawyer. Since 11 March 2003, she is a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Life
Steiner studied law at the University of São Paulo and Criminal Law at the University of Brasília. She also graduated from the Law Faculty of the University of São Paulo a Masters in international law.
She then worked until 1982 as a lawyer and then worked for the Ministério Público do Brasil until 1995. Steiner was also for four years a member and Vice President of the Prison Council of São Paulo and from 1995 Federal Judge at the Court of Appeals of São Paulo. She also was a member of the Brazilian delegation to the Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court (1999-2001) and the Brazilian delegation at the first Meeting of the Parties of the International Criminal Court in September 2002.
On March 11, 2003, she was named on the list A for a term of nine years as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. It acts on the Court as head of the Pre-Trial Division and is a member of the First Chamber with the responsibility of Democratic Republic of Congo and Darfur.
Steiner is co-founder of the Brazilian Institute of Criminology and Deputy Director of the Brazilian Criminal Sciences Journal. In addition, she serves on the Executive Council of the Brazilian branch of the International Law Commission.
