Sylvio Kroll

Sylvio Kroll ( born April 29, 1965 in Lubben ) is a former German gymnast.

Life and sporting career

Kroll was discovered early on by the young talent of the GDR sport. Six years old his sport was established. His first coach at TC Lubben was 1971-1974 Guido Janz, the father of Olympic gold medalist Karin Janz. From 1975 he attended the Children's and Youth Sports School in Cottbus and regularly participated in Children 's and Youth, where he was four-time winner in 1979, in the all around, floor, high bar and vault. In the junior championships 1981 he took three titles ( all-around, bars and floor). In 1982 he became the first East German champion in the jump and won the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. In 1983 he took part for the first time at a World Cup, but could not place in the top three is. Because of the boycott of the Games by the GDR and other states he could not attend the 1984 Summer Olympics. The " replacement games ", the competitions of friendship in the Czechoslovak Olomouc, he underlined his good form with gold and silver in jump with the team.

His most successful year was 1985, when he became European champion in horse jumping and Vice European Champion on the parallel bars and pommel horse, claimed the title at the World Gymnastics Championships at the bars, vice world champion on the horizontal bar was and two bronze medals won - in the individual all-around and with the team. He also won the DTB Cup in freestyle six- fight. At these performances he graduated the following year with his third GDR champion in horse jumping and his second on the high bar. In the jump he was World Cup winner, on the high bar he took second and third place on the ground. At Euro 1987, he was able to win two silver medals ( jumping and stretching ) and at the World Cup he became world champion in jump and won the bronze medal with the team. He also won the DTB Cup in the jump and on pommel horse, was second in the all-around and third on the high bar. During the preparation for the Olympic Games in 1988, he contracted pulmonary edema. Nevertheless, he won two silver medals in Seoul, one with the team and one on the horse jump. In the same disciplines, he won the following year at the World Championships in Stuttgart two silver medals. He also won the DTB Cup in horse jump, was second on the high bar and third on the rings. In 1991 he was at the World Championship in Indianapolis still the bronze medal with the team, the German Cup win on pommel horse and the runner-up in the jump and in the all around. In the 1992 Olympics he was "only" sixth in the jump and fourth with the team.

Kroll studied from 1986 at the German University of Physical Culture and Sports ( DHfK ). After his career as a player he worked at Cottbus Sports Department and was from 1997 to 2007 Tournament Director of the Cottbus World Cup " Tournament of Champions ". 2007 to 2008 he headed the Olympic Training Center Stuttgart. Since 2009 he works at the Olympic Training Center Frankfurt ( Oder). He also commented since 1994 for international Euro Gymnastic competitions and has been a member since 2003 of the Executive Committee of the European Gymnastics Union ( UEG ).

He has been married since 1989 and has two children with his wife. His hobbies include contemporary literature and music.
