His younger brother George was also a professional hockey player.

Career

Sylvio Mantha began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at the Montreal National amateur team for which he was active in the season 1922/23. Subsequently, it was due to good performance required by the Canadiens de Montréal from the professional National Hockey League, with whom he won the prestigious Stanley Cup in season 1923/24, right off the bat. In the aftermath of the defenders became a fixture in the team and won with the Canadiens in 1930 and 1931 again the title. For him, even this time was successful and in 1931 and 1932, he was selected in each case in the second All- Star team in the NHL. For the season 1935/36, he took over the position as player-coach with the Canadiens, but the team had to leave at the end of the season after missing the playoffs. Towards the end of the season 1936/37, he was obliged by NHL rival Boston Bruins, completed for this, however, only four games in the regular season. Most recently, he ran in the season 1937/38, on the amateur team Montreal Concordia, before he ended his active career at the age of 35 years.

Until 1943, he oversaw the Montreal Concordia as a head coach. He then became involved as a coach at youth level and was there from 1943 to 1945 for the Laval National, 1945-1947 for the Verdun Maple Leafs and 1947 to 1948 worked for the St. Jerome Eagles. He then withdrew from the Hockey. In 1960 he was honored with the Hockey Hall of Fame.
