Symbol (typeface)

Symbol is a serif font, the PostScript -compatible printers is available next to Helvetica, Times Roman, and Courier.

It encodes its own symbol set that contains different symbols for use in a mathematical context.

  • The code points 0x00 - 0x1F, 0x7F 0x9F, 0xF0 and 0xFF ( in the table shown in green) are not used.
  • The range 0x20 - 0x3F encoded as ASCII punctuation characters, which punctuation marks that are not needed in the mathematical context, were replaced by other mathematical characters.
  • The range 0x40 - 0x7E encodes the complete Greek alphabet without accents. The Greek letters here are sorted by the Latin alphabet, with letters for which there is no equivalent in Greek, were replaced by Greek characters from mathematics.
  • ( Shown in red ) The character at code point 0x60 is not encoded in Unicode and therefore can not be shown. It serves to extend the overline of the square root sign.
  • The range 0xA0 - 0xE4 encodes some currency symbols, as well as a variety of special mathematical symbols. Letters ®, © and ™ are encoded twice, once without serifs, once with serifs ( in the table marked orange)
  • The range 0xE6 - 0xF2 - 0xFE 0xEF and contains elements that can be used to construct brackets and integral sign, which extend over multiple lines.

Implementations of the symbol font there except in PostScript printers on Apple systems ( as a Mac OS icon character set ) and Windows ( as a font called symbol).
