Symeon of Polotsk

Simeon Polozki (Russian Симеон Полоцкий ), Symeon of Polotsk, born Samuel Piotrowski Sitnianowicz, Russian Самуил Гаврилович Петровский - Ситнянович; (* 1629 in Polotsk, † August 25, 1680 in Moscow) was a Russian, Belarusian and Polish monk and writer.

Life

Simeon was educated at the academy in Kiev and joined the Basilian monastery in 1656 in Polotsk on (" Simeonis Piotrowskj Sitnianowicz hieromonachi Polocens. [Is ] Ord [ inis ] p [ ancti ] Bas. [ Ilii ] M. [ agni ]"). Initially, he wrote in Polish or in a mixture of Ukrainian and Belarusian. At this time he wrote mainly so-called " empty rhetoric " that were Panegyrika. In Pskov, he met the Tsar Alexis I, who was impressed by his literary and appointed him in 1664 to Moscow. Here he worked at the convent school as a teacher and translator.

Simeon left behind an extensive body of work by tens of thousands of verses. He mastered all the Baroque popular genera and had a wide knowledge of ancient mythology and literature. According to I. Eremin he has " brought the first poetry as an art form to Russia ".
