Symphony No. 12 (Shostakovich)

The 12th Symphony in D minor, Op 112 was 1960/1961 composed by Dmitri Shostakovich and is subtitled The Year 1917 and the dedication Vladimir Ilyich Lenin In memory of.

The work was on October 1, 1961 in front of the XXII. Congress of the CPSU by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Yevgeny Mravinsky premiered. On the occasion of the premiere of Shostakovich was included in the CPSU.

Form

The symphony has a total playing time of about 40 minutes and is divided into the following four sets which merge into each other without a break:

  • Revolutionary Petrograd (14 min), Moderato / Allegro
  • Razliv (10 min), Allegro / Adagio ( Razliv was a shelter Lenin )
  • Aurora ( 6 min), Allegro
  • Dawn of Humanity (10 min ), ( Allegro / Allegretto )
