Symphorien Champier

Symphorien Champier (* 1471 in Saint- Symphorien, France, † 1538 in Lyon) was a physician, historian, translator and editor.

He married Marguerite Terrail and they intermarried with Pierre du Terrail, Chevalier de Bayard, about whom he wrote a biography.

Life

As a doctor of medicine in Montpellier Champier was the personal physician of Anton II (Lorraine ), whom he followed to Italy, as he there as a follower of Louis XII. participated in several battles. Finally he settled in Lyon. In Lyon, he works with satirical François Rabelais, the Champier in his work Gargantua and Pantagruel described. In Lyon, he founded the Collège des Médecins de Lyon and practiced a number of offices in the foundations of the city, including the Ecole des Médecins de Lyon.

In addition to its efforts in medical science, he studied works by Greek and Arabic authors and wrote a number of historical books, including 1516 Chroniques de Savoie 1525 Vie de Bayard.

Champier published the works of the temple knight and physician Arnald of Villanova and wrote about him a biography.
