Syndesmophyte

Under syndesmophytes is understood in medicine a form of bone neoplasms ( osteophytes ), which remodel the outer edge of the intervertebral discs and thus restricting the mobility of the vertebral bodies to each other. Of the spondylophytes they differ in that they grow vertically, the Spondylophyt contrast grows more horizontally and tries to increase the joint surface. The Spondylophyt is a typical phenomenon in the spondylosis deformans.

Occurrence

Syndesmophytes are the radiographic Leitbefund in ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew's disease ). They are formed to relieve the affected joints. Therefore, the body in the advanced stage tries to fix the spine.
