Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 29 to 31 millimeters. On the fore wings prevail gray-brown staining. They show in the dark midfield a characteristic silver-white characters, in the form of the letter gamma from the Greek alphabet. Gamma's character is formed wide and the front end slightly divergent. Ring and kidney blemish are boxed weak whitish, but taking nearly nothing from the underground. The shaft line is very strongly serrated. The hind wings are yellow and equipped with a narrow black Saumbinde. The thorax is hairy and furry provided with some tufts of hair, the proboscis is well developed.

Caterpillar

Full-grown caterpillars are reddish-brown color. They show bright segment incisions, yellow back and side back lines and also yellow side stripes.

Doll

The black-brown doll is accompanied by a short proboscis sheath and a long, stem-like cremaster.

Similar Species

  • Hochenwarths Gold Owl ( Syngrapha hochenwarthi ) differs by a mostly brownish color on the front wings and slightly wider outlets in the upper part of the gamma - character
  • The Moor - Gold Owl ( Syngrapha micro gamma) differs by a wider black Saumbinde on the hind wings. In both the above types the wavy line is less jagged.
  • Syngrapha rilaecacuminum is paler in overall appearance and has a more elongated gamma characters. The species colonized only a few mountain ranges in Bulgaria.

Distribution and habitat

Syngrapha devergens comes in the high altitudes of the Alps, in the Tian Shan and Altai Mountains. Main habitat of the species are dry mountain slopes.

Way of life

The moths of Syngrapha devergens form one generation per year, the main flight period is in the months of July and August. They fly mainly during the day in the sunshine and suck like the flowers of Leimkräutern ( Silene ). At night they visit very rarely artificial light sources. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various preferred by campion ( Silene ), plantain ( Plantago ), Violet ( Viola ) and cloves Wurzen species ( Geum ). They overwinter twice.
