Blueberry syllable Owl ( Syngrapha interrogationis )

The blueberry syllable Owl ( Syngrapha interrogationis ), also referred to as noise berry syllable Owl, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

The blueberry syllable Owl is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan 32-38 mm from the subfamily of Gold Owl ( Plusiinae ). The moths have ash-gray or dark gray forewings with silver characters, which usually consist of a point and a rounded line. In the rest position, that is, with roof-like folded wings, similar to the kind of slightly larger Gammaeule ( Autographa gamma) or larch Gold Owl ( Syngrapha ain ), both of which are, however, marked contrast. The larch Gold Owl additionally distinguished by the yellow underwing. Due to strong variation in color and pattern are the following forms of the blueberry syllable Owl described:

  • F.cinerea Warr. , with dull ash-gray, lower contrast forewings
  • F.aureomaculata Vorbr. , with gold instead of silver metal sign
  • F.flammifera Huene, with enlarged and coalesced silver stain
  • F orbata Warr. , without metal sign

The caterpillars are light green and have a dark green dorsal line with bright edges. The doll is blackish.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The blueberry syllable Owl occurs worldwide in northern regions, from Alaska across Canada, Europe, Siberia to Northeast Asia before. In the Alps, you can still find them at altitudes of 2,400 meters. The occurrence includes bogs, moors, forests with blueberry vegetation, forest edges and gardens.

Way of life

The moths fly during the day and at night. The females lay eggs on the food plant from, which hatch the caterpillars in the fall and then feed on the leaves of various plants, such as:

  • Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)
  • Bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum )
  • Nettle (Urtica )

They overwinter and pupate mainly in May of the following year in a white- gray tissue. The moths fly from June to August.

Endangering

The species occurs in Germany with varying frequency - but most often - before and is on the Red List of endangered species under Category V (ie, near threatened ) out.
