Syr Darya sturgeon

Syr - Shovelnose ( Pseudoscaphirhynchus fedtschenkoi )

The Syr - Shovelnose ( Pseudoscaphirhynchus fedtschenkoi ) is a probably extinct species from the family of sturgeons ( Acipenseridae ). It is endemic in the Syr Darya in Central Asia before.

Features

The Syr - Shovelnose sturgeon, like other blade a spindle-shaped, widened front body with a wide, flat spatula-shaped snout. How the Small Amu - Shovelnose ( Pseudoscaphirhynchus mercantile ) it only reaches a body length of 20.7 to 27 centimeters, with the filament of the tail up to 36 centimeters. The snout bears no spines and is longer than in the two - blade Amu Darya sturgeon. Their length varies significantly between the different morphs. Along the body extend the typical sturgeon five rows of bony scales, which are more numerous than in the Amu Darya species. The row along the back counts 15 to 22 shields with 4-5 other small shields behind the 30 - to 34 - rayed dorsal fin. The lateral rows are 37 to 46 and the abdominal rows 6 to 11 shields. The pectoral fins are folded at its outer edge to the top. The anal fin has 19-20 rays in front of her sitting 4-5, behind again 1-5 small shields.

Historically, three morphs can be distinguished. The usual morphs had a long snout and no filament on the tail fin, which brevirostris morphs a shorter snout and a long filament at the upper lobe of the tail fin and the intermedia - morph a medium long muzzle and a medium- long filament.

Occurrence and life

The species is endemic in the Syr Darya and populated before the lower and middle sections of the river. About the way of life almost nothing is known. Adult animals feed mainly on benthic insect larvae. The spawning season is in April.

Threat and protection

The Syr - Shovelnose is threatened primarily by the destruction of its habitat. The final proof of the species comes from 1960, so that it is effectively thought to be extinct. It is listed the Washington Convention and Appendix II of the Bonn Convention in Annex II and threatened in the IUCN Red List as endangered ( Critically Endangered ) classified.
