Syrian parliamentary election, 2003
Parliament elections were held in Syria on March 5, 2003. They were the first People's Council elections, which were held under the new president Bashar al - Asad. The number of seats, which was the ruling National Progressive Front, was 167, the Independents received 83 seats. But the Baath party won 135 seats ( 126 are required for an absolute majority ). The turnout was 63%. After the election Muhammad Naji al - Utri was appointed Prime Minister.
