Syro-Malankara Catholic Church

The Syro - Malankara Catholic Church Syro - Malankara Church or a Catholic Eastern Church of Indian Christians of St. Thomas, which follows the west Syrian liturgical rite; see also Christian denominations in Kerala.

History

The Syro- Karen are a part of that Indian Christians of St. Thomas, which were ( in South India known as " Jacobites ") under the so-called oath from the Leaning Cross ( 1653), and the autocephalous Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church. They had it their ancestral East Syrian Rite ( Chaldean rite also ) Subscribe to the Thomas Christians, because they found the consecration grant only westsyrische Bishops of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch. From there they took forcibly the West Syrian Rite (also Antioch rite ). The greater part of the Thomas Christians preserved the union with Rome in 1653 and to this day still follows the original East Syrian Rite. It is known as the Syro -Malabar Church.

Given permanent divisions within the Syrian Orthodox Christians of St. Thomas in India took in 1926 of standing in opposition to the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch Metropolitan of Malankara, Mar Basil II († 1929), with its five bishops Union with Rome. Here, they found only the requirement for:

  • ( 2) leaving the ruling bishops in their seats and
  • ( 3) independence from the Patriarchate of Antioch.

These conditions were approved by the Holy See.

The Union negotiations got under way by the friendship between the Latin Bishop of Quilon, Bishop Alois Benziger and the resident in the diocesan territory Orthodox Archbishop Mar Ivanios. Benziger was a connoisseur of oriental liturgies and revised by Mar Ivanios in view of the impending union with Rome, the westsyrische liturgy of the community. Both bishops acted out the detailed questions of the Union.

On September 20, 1930, first appeared only two bishops in communion communion with the Pope in Rome:

  • Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios Panicker (1932-1953 Archbishop of Trivandrum) and
  • Bishop Mar Theophilos, from Tiruvalla O.I.C. ( ill after 1938, † 1956).

The formal transfer took place in the Bishop's Chapel at Quilon, where today still remembers a plaque on it. Bishop Benziger was commissioned by the Pope against the creed of the two bishops and welcomed her into the full communion of the Catholic Church. The next morning there was the first mass in the new Syro -Malankara rite place. The beatification process has been introduced for Mar Ivanios now and he has been declared in a precursor to the " servants of God ".

A few years later two other bishops:

1932 Annual Syro - Malankara Catholic hierarchy of the church was decorated with Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram ) as Metropolie and Tiruvalla as suffragan, with no legal binding to the Syrian Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch.

The priest Givergis Paniker (1912-1986) was a leading liturgists of the Malankara Catholics.

Presence

The union with the Roman Catholic Church was so successful that the eight dioceses, now headed by the Major Archbishop of Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram ) is, currently include about 430,000 believers. Outside of India, there are twelve communities in the U.S. and five in Germany.

In the Syro -Malankara rite is the celebration toward the people - as usual today in the Latin Rite - forbidden. Also of interest is the monastic life on the basis of Kurisumala Ashram (1958). It is a community of Cistercian monks, celebrating the Syrian liturgy and life in strict asceticism.
