SYSLINUX

The SYSLINUX Project created a series slimmer boot loader for booting the Linux kernel from Hans Peter Anvin. The most popular software of which represents ISOLINUX

Projects

  • Two separate menu systems.
  • A development environment for additional modules.

Use

SYSLINUX and ISOLINUX

SYSLINUX is not used usually to start all Linux installations since Linux is not usually set up on FAT file systems. Instead, it is often used to boot or rescue floppy and USB mass storage devices. ISOLINUX is commonly used in Linux live CD systems and bootable installation CDs.

A minor difficulty arises when booting from CD -ROM. The El Torito standard allows for booting in two modes:

This selection is sometimes useful because ISOLINUX (mainly in computers prior to 1999 ) is susceptible to BIOS error.

PXELINUX

PXELINUX is used in conjunction with a PXE -compliant read-only memory (ROM ) on a network card. The Preboot Execution Environment uses DHCP or BOOTP to include networking with TCP / IP, and then loads via tftp the boot software download which loads a kernel and configure accordingly also downloaded from the TFTP server instructions.
