Sysmä

Sysmä is a town in southern Finland. It is located around 60 kilometers north of the city of Lahti on the eastern shore of Lake Päijänne.

Sysmä located in a lake and hills amidst the Finnish Lake District. The mean level of Lake Päijänne is 78 m, the ridge Kammivuori reaches a height of 220 m. A part of the municipality, including the island Päijätsalo, is part of the Päijänne National Park.

Sysmä was already in 1442 as a freelance parish. Several farms from the Baroque era attest to the wealth of the landowners, especially those of noble family Tanderfelt. The estates Virtaan Vanhakartano and Virtaan Kartano are open to the public. The stone church of St. Olaf was the beginning of the 16th century built. The original single-nave building was built in 1833 designed by Carl Ludwig Engel remodeled the Cross Church.

In addition to the Kirchdorf Sysmä the municipality includes the towns of Joutsjärvi, Karilanmaa, Kinnarila, Koivisto, Käenmäki, Liikola, Nikkaroinen, Nuoramoinen, Onkiniemi, Otamo, Palvala, Rapala, Ravioskorpi, Saarenkylä, Soiniemi, Suurkylä, Särkilahti, Taipale, Toivola, Valittula, Vintturi, Virtaa and Voipala.
