System X (computing)

System X is a super computer for general research tasks, which is at Virginia Tech University in the USA. Formerly known as Terascale Cluster or Big Mac ( because of its ingredients from PowerMacs ).

The computer was originally ( early 2004 ) from 1100 computers Apple PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 GHz PowerPC 970, achieved a computing power of about 10 teraflops and then jumped directly to the third place of the TOP500 list of supercomputers in November 2003.

The Terascale Cluster was replaced 2.3GHz few months later after negotiations with Apple Xserve PowerPC 970FX by 1100 G5 Dual. He then scored on a benchmark approximately 12.25 teraflops and reached in November of 2004, number seven, in June 2007, he was on the 71st place of the TOP500 list.
