Systomus

Systomus sarana

Systomus is a genus of small and medium South Asian carp (Cyprinidae ). The genus was erected in 1839 by British physician John McClelland, but found no recognition then, as the type species Systomus immaculatus is little known and the type specimens were apparently lost. The genus was synonymized with Puntius. Only in 1996 the genus by the American ichthyologist Walter Both Rain was re- validated to classify some Cambodian barbels, which were previously placed in the genus Puntius. 2011 recommended the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat and his Singaporean colleague Tan Heok Hui in their first description of Systomus xouthos for Southeast Asian barbels in the future the generic name to use Systomus because few of these species Puntius sensu stricto ( by the type species Puntius sophore defined ) can be assigned. In July 2012, the genre was Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage was newly diagnosed.

Features

Systomus species reach as adult fish normally a standard length of more than 8 cm. The body of the Systomus species is laterally flattened and elongated. Diagnostic features of the genus are the presence of rostral and maxillary barbels, and a dorsal fin with 4 unbranched and 8 branched fin rays, the last unbranched fin ray of the dorsal fin is serrated stiff and strong. The lateral line is complete with 27 to 34 scales. The simple gill rakers are pointed and not branched or lamellar ( flattened ). Free Uroneuralia are available, 5 vertebrae with spinous processes ( Supraneuralien ), 14 to 15 vertebrae in the abdomen and 17 to 19 in the tail spine. The infra- orbital bones # 3 (bone around the eye ) is slim. Color characteristic of the genus have a long, oval, dark spot on the caudal peduncle. Conspicuous spots and bands are missing.
