Szamocin

Szamocin ( German Samotschin, 1943-45 Fritz town ) is a town in Poland, in Wielkopolska.

History

The first written mention of a settlement on the site of the present Szamocin called Szamoczino is from 1364. Municipal law as property of the Bętkowski family received Szamocin 1748 by Augustus III. awarded. Two years later, the city passed into the possession of Raczyński family.

In the First Partition of Poland, the city fell to Prussia. With the formation of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1807, the city was the same part. 1815, the Duchy of Warsaw was dissolved and the Prussian Grand Duchy of Posen founded, in which then took Szamoczino.

In the 18th century the craft of weaving became an important economic factor for the city; up to 62 weavings produced in the city. When in 1831 a steam engine was put into operation, it was the first in the whole of Great Poland. A large fire in 1840 destroyed much of the city. This was also the beginning of the decline of the textile industry.

Under the Earl Edward Raczyński the city in the 19th century was enlarged and there was, for example, the second market today plac Wolności created. The connection to the rail network of Chodziez after Gołańcz was 1908.

After the First World War the city became part of the newly formed in 1921 Poland. On 1 September 1939 the German Wehrmacht marched into the city and held it open until 1945. On 22 January 1945 the Red Army marched into Szamocin and the city was again part of Poland.

After an administrative reform in 1975, the city was part of the newly formed Province Pila. Since its dissolution in 1999 Szamocin is part of the Wielkopolska Region.
