Szigetköz

The Small Rye Island ( ungar Szigetkoz, Slovak:. Maly Žitný ostrov ) is an island which is formed by the main stream of the Danube and Moson- Danube. From the island the greater part lies on the Hungarian, the northern smaller on Slovak territory. Administratively, the island is located in Győr- Moson -Sopron, the Slovak part belongs to Okres Dunajská Streda, Trnavský kraj.

In contrast to the Great Rye Island, the small island bulk is on the right side of the Danube. It begins at river kilometer in 1854 and is 52.5 km long and 6-8 km wide. Its area is 375 km ².

The island is but two not only shared by the two countries, it also provides no other unit dar. During the Southern Hungarian section already has a millennia- long existence and is populated accordingly, the northern part is actually developed only by the construction of the power plant Gabčíkovo. Through the construction of power plants, the Danube has moved to a new riverbed in the interior of Slovakia and the part between the storage area of the Danube and the power station canal came to the island to small bulk.

The island was created by the landing of the Danube, which breaks just above the Hainburger gate. Due to the flat course of the island it is on the one hand often flooded, on the other hand crossed by many small rivers with a total length of 200 kilometers. Many places have been rebuilt several times in different places by floods or remained deserted villages, remember the only field names. Large floods were in the years 1242, 1426, 1760, 1809, 1845, 1850, 1862, 1883. The last major flood was in 1954.

In the 19th century, although a number of flood control works were built, but they could not meet the requirements. Sun, 18 dams were recorded with appropriate flooding alone 1853-1883.

Only in the 20th century succeeded by dikes, which, as usual, right on the riverfront, but heaped further inland were not to achieve a successful flood protection and to get still large areas of the floodplain. The island serves as a breeding ground and migratory birds is a sanctuary for wild animals (eg deer ). In addition, different plant species occur here that are otherwise not found in the two countries.

Since 1987, large parts of the Rye Island are protected. It is also planned on the island's National Park Szigetkoz.
