Szymon Askenazy

Szymon Askenazy ( born December 28, 1866 in Zawichost, † June 22, 1935 in Warsaw) was a Polish historian, diplomat and politician.

From 1902 he was professor at the University of Lemberg. In 1909 he was inducted into the Polish Academy of Sciences. After Poland regained its independence, Askenazy was selected as the first Polish representative in the League of Nations ( 1920-1923 ). He was forced to resign because of an anti-Semitic campaign.

In his works, he devoted himself to the political and economic history of Poland in the 18th and 19th century, thus laying the foundation for the Lvov -Warsaw School (also known as " Askenazy - school " means ). He was the first historian who thought the time of the Polish partitions to be crucial for the creation of modern Polish nation.

Askenazys idea of describing the history of a nation on the social and economic development and its international and diplomatic background remain important for modern Polish historians.
