T. J. Cobden-Sanderson

Thomas James Cobden - Sanderson ( born December 2, 1840 in Alnwick, † September 7, 1922 ) was an English bookbinders, printers and artists.

Thomas James Sanderson was born in Alnwick, a small town in the north of Northumberland and studied law first at Owen 's College, Manchester University and then at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. He left the university without a formal degree. In 1882 he married Anne Cobden ( 1853-1926 ) and took its name as an additional surname. Through his wife he came in contact with the Arts and Crafts Movement and became acquainted with William Morris, the principal representative of the new book art movement. Cobden - Sanderson began to work for a company founded by Morris Kelmscott Press. Together with Emery Walker he founded in the London Borough of Hammersmith, the Doves Press. 1901 Cobden - Sanderson published his book aesthetic manifesto The Ideal Book or Book Beautiful.
