Tacurong

Tacurong City is one of the city in the Philippine province of Sultan Kudarat in Mindanao.

The city was formerly known under the name Pamansang.

Origin of the name

The name of the present town derives from the name Talakudong from the language of Maguindanao. This is a term for a headgear that was worn by the early settlers and the people of the area.

Why the site was associated with a head covering is no longer follow. What is certain is that the name Tacurong is a shortened and altered form of the concept Talakudong.

Language and religion

Most of the inhabitants of the city are descended from immigrants from Iloilo. Accordingly Ilonggo is the mother tongue of 53 780 people, or 70.37 % of the residents. 11,838 or 15.49% speak the dialect Ilocano, while the remaining 14.14% of the residents to communicate in another language, such as Cebuano ( 4.33% ), Maguindanao ( 3.69% ), Tagalog ( 3.61% ) and other dialects (2.51 %).

The dominant religion is Roman Catholic with 58 371 believers, representing 83.6 % of the residents. 5.18% or 3,616 are followers of Islam and 11:22 % belong to other faiths.

Geography

Tacurong City is located in the center of the island of Mindanao. The city is located 92 km from General Santos, 96 km from Cotabato City and 178 from Davao City.

The metropolitan area is surrounded by the municipality Lambayong in the north, Isulan in the West, Pres. Quirino in the east and from Tantangan from the province of South Cotabato in the south.

The terrain of the city area is mostly flat. About 84 % is flat and has a slope of more than 8%. The steeper areas are located in the southeast of the city. The area is crossed by numerous rivers and streams that flow through the Tucarong from south to north.

History

The place of the later city of Tacurong was once a Baranggay the management community Buluan and belonged to the former big Cotabato province. The place at that time was still called " Pamansang " according to a creek that flows through the area from north to south.

In 1940 the place to a way station for travelers and Christian missionaries on their way to various stations in Cotabato was.

By Executive Order No. 462, issued by the future President Elpidio Quirino, Tacurong was separated on 3rd 1951 by Auguste Buluan and appointed an independent management community. Tacurong sat down at that time composed of 14 barangays.

When in 1961 the district Tantangan from the management community dissolved and was appointed to a separate municipality, Tacurong lost its entire southern areas. On 22 November, the new Sultan Kudarat province was formed by the Presidential Decree No. 341, which included a total of 12 municipalities. Although the community Isulan was awarded the seat of the provincial government, Tacurong remained the leading church of the new province.

Through the efforts of Congressman Angelo O. Montilla, changed the force of the Republic Act No. 8805, signed by President Joseph Estrada in force after 49 years the status of the community and made it on 16 August 2000 a Component City ( provincial town ) the province of Sultan Kudarat. The appointment was confirmed on 18 September by a popular vote of the citizens.

Economy

The main industry are rice and wheat mills and agricultural trade. In the city you will find the largest grain processing complex in the country.
