Tadashi Kawamata

Tadashi Kawamata (Japanese川 俣 正, Tadashi Kawamata, * 1953 in Mikasa, Hokkaido ) is a Japanese sculptor and photographer who lives and works in Tokyo and Paris.

Life and work

Kawamata is born in 1953 in northern Japan and obtained from the 1972 Hokkaido - Iwamizawa -Higashi High School graduated from high school. 1999 to 2005 he taught at the Tōkyō Daigaku Geijutsu in Tokyo since Tadashi Kawamata is a professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris, Paris. 2005 Kawamata was artistic director of the 3rd Yokohama Triennale.

Tadashi Kawamata operates worldwide. His works consist in relation to their surroundings. He developed building constructions of superimposed beams and boards that are sourced locally or nearby. In some projects, he refers to the makeshift shelters for the homeless. Other monumental work pieces are bridge projects or non-accessible tree houses such as at the Berlin House of World Cultures.
