Tadateru Konoe

Tadateru Konoe (Japanese近卫 忠辉, Konoe Tadateru; born May 8, 1939 in the prefecture of Tokyo as Moriteru Hosokawa (细 川 护 辉, Hosokawa Moriteru ) ) is a Japanese official of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

He obtained in 1962 a degree in Political Science at Gakushuin University and graduated in 1964 to study at the London School of Economics in the field of international relations. Since 1964 he has held various positions at the National Red Cross Society of Japan operates, among others, in 1988 as Secretary-General from 1991 to 2005 as vice president and as president since 2005.

In the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from 1981 to 1985 he was director of the Office for Disaster Reduction, 1985-1993 Member of the Finance Committee and from 2005 to 2009 vice-president. From 1995 to 2003 he was a member of the Standing Commission of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which is the highest organ of movement between all four -yearly International Red Cross and Red Crescent conferences. In November 2009 he was elected to succeed the Spaniard Juan Manuel Suárez Del Toro Rivero, the first representative of an Asian country as President of the International Federation.

Family

Tadateru Konoe is since 1966 married with Yasuko (宁 子), the eldest daughter of Prince Mikasa ( Takahito ) of Japan, and father of screenwriter Konoe Tadahiro (近卫 忠 大). His elder brother is former Japanese Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa. His father was the politician Morisada Hosokawa (细 川 护 贞), and his maternal grandfather, the Prime Minister Konoe Fumimaro. After his son died Fumitaka in Soviet captivity, his wife Masako Tadateru adopted in the Konoe family. His birth name was Moriteru (护 辉).
