Taeromys

Taeromys is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes seven species.

There are rat-like animals. They reach a body length 19-25 centimeters, the tail measures 16 to 30 centimeters. The fur is brown or gray-brown on the top, the bottom is light gray. The tail is usually dark in the front part and towards the tip lighter. The hind legs are long and slender, the skull is built dainty.

These rodents are endemic to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Their habitat is forests, both deeper and mountain forests. Most species are bottom dwellers, their diet consists of fruit, leaves and insects. Otherwise, little is known about their way of life.

The seven modes are:

  • Taeromys arcuatus in Southeast Sulawesi,
  • Taeromys callitrichus in North and Central Sulawesi,
  • Taeromys celebensis in lowlands throughout most of Sulawesi
  • Taeromys hamatus in mountainous countries in Central Sulawesi
  • Taeromys microbullatus in Southeast Sulawesi,
  • Taeromys punicans in lowland areas in Central and South Sulawesi and
  • Taeromys Tdrd in mountainous regions in north Sulawesi.

Even on the level of risk we know little. The IUCN lists the species with the exception of the unchallenged T. celebensis under "too little data available " ( data deficient ).
