Tafí del Valle Department

The department Tafi del Valle is in the northwest of the province of Tucumán in northwestern Argentina, and is one of 17 administrative units in the province. It is bordered to the north by the province of Salta, on the east by the departments Trancas, Tafi Viejo, Lules and Famaillá, to the south by the Departamento Monteros and to the west by the province of Catamarca.

Geography

Virtually all Departamento Tafi del Valle is mountainous and is dominated by two large valleys, the Valle de Tafi and the Valle de Yocavil. The latter is one of the Calchaquíes.

Population

According to the last census, the Departamento Tafi del Valle 13,883 inhabitants ( INDEC, 2001). An estimate of the INDEC from 2005 shows an increase of 16,149 inhabitants.

In the area of the department of Tafi del Valle are three of the most important tourist destinations of the province: Tafi del Valle, El Mollar and the ruins of Quilmes
