History

According to the historian Lizondo Borda Tafi the name dates back to the 16th century and Taui was pronounced. This was a corruption of the word thaaui from the language of Aymara and means as much as place where a cool wind blowing or cold place. If we decompose the Aymara word into its components, would thaa the importance of cold and ui would mean the location of the place where it is cold. This interpretation is supported by the city's location at the foot of Aconquija massif.

Tafi Viejo began as a summer resort in the provincial capital. Its growth and development owes the city but the Talleres de Tafi Viejo Ferroviarios. The railroad shops were the largest employer until its closure in 1980. They led to the establishment of other plants in their area and helped that Tafi Viejo one of the economically most prosperous towns in the province of Tucumán was. On June 2, 1939 Tafi Viejo was elevated to the rank of a municipalidad.

Unlike most cities in Argentina, the institutional and business center of the city did not develop to the Plaza Central, but along the Avenida Leandro N. Alem, that is west of the railway workshops.

With the decline of the railway as a transportation and the economic pulse through the railway workshops subsided. Also, their re-opening on a smaller scale on January 24, 1984, the government of Raúl Alfonsín could not stop the economic and social decline.
