TAFLIR

TAFLIR is the abbreviation for the " Tactical Aviator radar " of the Swiss Army. The TAFLIR used to support air traffic control.

Procurement

Due to the topography of Switzerland there are radar shadow, in which the permanently installed on the mountains radars not " look inside " can. Therefore, in 1985 five mobile radar systems were purchased for a total price of 254 million francs to improve the overall air situation picture Switzerland and replaced the target allocation radar TPS -1E was in 24 pieces in use.

To what extent such a system (see Iraq War ), is able to survive in a war effort, in which the initial attack waves against just such facilities are directed to be seen. In peace operations, however TAFLIR provides good services, eg for use during the " WEF - support mission."

Technology

The TAFLIR is a modified version of the requirements for Swiss AN/TPS-70 radar of the company Westinghouse (now Northrop Grumman ). It uses a phased array antenna and primary radar, which reduces a radiation side lobes more than 50 %, thus reducing the vulnerability to anti-radar missile, and a secondary radar. The radar uses a phase- coded pulse compression to improve accuracy and resolution in the distance. As an active protective measure against electronic countermeasures, the transmission frequency from pulse to pulse can be changed. The heart of the TAFLIR is mounted on a truck rotatable antenna. To this end, different containers come with radar electronics, operation terminals and cooling devices. Thanks transportable vehicles to swap bodies, the TAFLIR change within hours its location. The radar data of TAFLIR be fed directly into the FLORAKO system.

Use

In times of peace is ever a system stationed in the vicinity of military airfields in order to improve the representation of the air situation. Otherwise the systems are incorporated in special NEMP protected caverns.

The TAFLIR system (formerly also in addition to rails ) ready for use on roads to transport and within a few hours.

The TAFLIR system is used, if the representation of the total air is to be improved locally, eg within the framework of the World Economic Forum. For the operation of a system, a mobile radar LW company is required. All companies are subject to the Mobile Air Force Radar Division 2. This is part of the teaching staff association management support 30 ( LVb FU 30).

As a comparable system, the Austrian low-flying aircraft detection radar (TER) can be considered.
