Taher Elgamal

Taher Elgamal (Arabic طاهر الجمل; born August 18, 1955 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian cryptographer.

He studied electrical engineering at Cairo University and graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree. At Stanford University, he attained a Master of Science and Ph.D. in computer science.

The notation used in this article, his name corresponds to the English practice, as Elgamal himself writes. A common German spelling would Tahir al - Jamal.

He published in 1985 his essay A Public Key Cryptosystem and a Signature Scheme Based on Discrete Logarithms, in which is described named after him ElGamal cryptosystem. Among his many contributions to cryptology include the Digital Signature Algorithm, the credit card payment system SET and SSL protocol.

Taher Elgamal worked from 1995 to 1998 as chief scientist for Netscape.

In 1998 he founded his own company ( Securify Inc ), which deals with computer security.

He is a member of the supervisory boards of various computer companies and a director of RSA Security.
