Taifals

The Taifalen were a people of uncertain origin. They are usually attributed to the East Germans, but partly also associated with the Sarmatians.

The Taifalen appear with the Visigoths ( tervingi ) in historiography, as they occur to 248 together with Vandals, Peukinern and Karpen in Niedermösien (Bulgaria). The terwingisch - taifalische tribal federation should have over 100 years of existence. Taifalen, Victofalen and Tervingi settle for a long time in the former Roman province of Dacia ( Wallachia, Banat, Transylvania ) and in the area on the lower Danube. Among the ever-increasing attacks by the Huns, the terwingisch - taifalische tribal confederation fell apart in 376 The Taifalen left the area and joined the greutungischen Ostrogoths. Under Farnobius they were defeated in 377 by Frieridus Marizatal. The survivors were in northern Italy near Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma located where. Still in the Lombard period the place name Taivalo, today San Giovanni in Persiceto, remembered her Others were deported to Gaul, where the place Tiffauges is named after them. In the early 5th century, the Taifalen in the Notitia Dignitatum are detected: A vexillation the Equites Honoriani Taifali iuniores under stood as Gallic cavalry unit the magister equitum. The Equites Honoriani ( Taifali ) iuniores were under the Comes Africae. Another taifalische unit, the Equites Taifali was stationed under the command of the Comes Britanniarum in Britain. In Gaul a Praefectus Sarmatarum et Taifalorum gentilium ( Prefect of the Sarmatians and Taifalen ) was used in Pictavis (Poitiers).

When the Visigoths in southern France built the Tolosanische Empire ( 418-507 ), were many Taifalen subjects of the Visigothic kings. However, the people maintained their identity and it did not come to a rapprochement as two hundred years earlier. Christianity was introduced in the middle of the 5th century. In the Merovingian period a pagus theifalia (about " Taifalen - Gau " ) occupied. Gregory of Tours wrote at the end of the 6th century that the still partly pagan Taifalen would not have murdered her bishop for religious reasons, but because it was forced upon them by the Frankish king.
