Origin and History

The Kyrgyz Greyhound taigan heard, as well as the Azawakh, Sloughi the, the Saluki, the Afghan Hound and the Central Asian Tazi to the Oriental sighthound breeds that are spread from North Africa to Central Asia. Since the Kyrgyz are a nomadic people, which has repeatedly changed its settlement area in the course of its history, it would be difficult to make precise statements about the origin of this breed. In its present form, however, the Taigan is a distinct high mountain breed, adapted to the work in his home country, the high mountains of Tianshan.

In the thirties, the first time was a collection of stocks by Soviet dog experts, a work which, however, was interrupted by the Second World War. 1964 breed standard for the Taigan was put into force in the former Soviet Union. The hunt with greyhounds enjoyed in the Soviet Union a certain promotion; the hunters were organized into collective farms and had to deliver fixed quantities of skins of their prey.

After Kyrgyzstan had obtained in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union its independence, changed the role of race: the collapse of many industries and collectivized agriculture meant that many Kyrgyz have gone back to the nomadic lifestyle of their ancestors. Hunting with the Taigan contributes to many of them to secure a livelihood at. In the newly created urban upper class Taigan was discovered as a prestigious symbol of Kyrgyz culture in recent years contrast. From the " Kennel Council of the Kyrgyz Republic " ( a Ministry of Agriculture assigned Authority), a new breed standard was adopted in 1995, and were carried out repeatedly breed shows in Bishkek.

A recognition of the breed by the FCI is not until now, the Union of cynologists of Kyrgyz Republic ( UCKR ) was in October 2009 contract partners, which only created the basis for a possible recognition.
