Taima-dera

The Buddhist temple of Taima -dera (当 麻 寺Japanese or当 麻 寺) is located in the Japanese prefecture of Nara in the city of Katsuragi.

The temple preserves the legend of Princess Chujo -hime, which wove in one night a Nirvana Mandala and was taken to Nirvana where she still lives today. The temple has two three-story pagodas dating from the 8th century. This is the only preserved in Japan combined.

A copy of the mandala, a statue of Princess Chujo -hime and a statue of Amida Nyorai - can be visited.

The heyday of the peony is especially recommended for this.

Festivals

  • The procession of the 25 Bodhisattvas plays the story of Princess Chujo -hime, which was led by 25 bodhisattvas in the Buddha's Nirvana. As a Bodhisattva dressed people walk in a procession from the Sabado Hall, the Hondo which is the way of the world into Nirvana.
