Taira no Shigehira

Taira no Shigehira (Japanese平 重 衡; * 1158, † 1185 ) was one of the sons of Taira no Kiyomori, and one of the supreme commander of the Taira clan. After the Battle of Uji ( 1180) ordered Shigehira, Nara burn down (see Siege of Nara ).

After he had defeated Minamoto no Yukiie in the Battle of Sunomata, he was chief of the armed forces of the Taira and was given command of 13,000 men.

Four years later he was defeated and taken prisoner, and then the monks of the Todai -ji temple that he had burned down pass, at the Battle of Ichi -no- Tani. He was then beheaded.
