Taisen Deshimaru

Mokudō Taisen Deshimaru Rōshi (Japanese弟子 丸 泰 仙, Deshimaru Taisen; * November 29, 1914, † April 30, 1982 in Japan) was a Japanese Zen master in the Soto line and a student of Kodo Sawaki ( 1880-1965 ), one of the most influential Japanese Zen master of the 20th century.

Deshimaru received in 1965 by Kodo Sawaki the monastic ordination and went in 1967 with the Trans-Siberian railway on the trip to Europe. He settled in Paris and gathered in a short time a flock of disciples around him, with which he successfully began the spread of Zen Buddhism in Europe. It created numerous new Zen groups practice zazen ( Shikantaza: Only concentrated seats) practiced.

In 1970, Taisen Deshimaru the Association Zen Internationale ( AZI ). In the 70 years he received Shiho from Master Yamada Reirin, the then head of the Eihei -ji Temple in Japan, and was Kaikyosokan of Soto Zen in Europe. In 1979 he founded the first Zen temple in Europe " Gendronniere " where regularly nowadays many people to sesshin, these are multi-day intensive meditation exercises participate.

On 30 April 1982 Deshimaru died in Japan.
