Tajchy

The tajchy (singular tajch, from the German word pond ) are a reservoir system in the mountains Štiavnica Hills to the Štiavnica ( German Schemnitz ) around in Central Slovakia. Most were created in the 18th century in order to gain energy for the local silver mines. At times, there were 60 of these reservoirs, which were connected with channels and tunnels with more than 100 km in length, today are still 24 available and mostly serve the recreational activities. Because of its historical importance, these are since 1993 a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Štiavnica and other technical monuments in the area.
