Talbotton is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in Talbot County and is its administrative headquarters.
Geography
Talbotton is centrally located in Talbot County. The nearby towns are Woodland, Manchester and Waverly Hall. The nearest major town, Columbus, located approximately 49 kilometers west, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta, about 121 kilometers north. The city covers an area of 8.1 km ².
Population
In 2000 1019 people lived in the city, of which 49.1 % men and 50.9 % women. Compared to the 1990 census, the population declined by 2.6%. The average age of the citizens of Talbotton is 38.4 years. 77.8 % of residents are African American and 19.6 % White. In 1999, the average annual per capita income was $ 10,662, considerably lower than the U.S. average ( $ 21,587 ). Approximately 32.5 % of the total population and 30.5 % of families are below the poverty line. Thus, the share of the poor is much higher than the national average.
History
The place was named after a former governor of Georgia, Matthew Talbot.
