The Tallahatchie River is part of the catchment area of ​​the Mississippi and rises in Tippah County in the northern part of the U.S. state of Mississippi. The name comes from the language of the Tallahatchie Choctaws and means something like " rock in the water".

The Tallahatchie River is 370 km long, of which 160 are navigable. At its upper reaches, which is sometimes called the Little Tallahatchie River, it flows through the Sardis Lake.

The river joins in Greenwood Leflore County in the Yalobusha River to the Yazoo River.

The river was known worldwide by 1967 the hit Ode to Billy Joe by Bobbie Gentry.
