Tamara Elizabeth " Tammy " Jernigan ( born May 7, 1959 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States) is a former American astronaut.

Life

Jernigan 1981 he received a bachelor's degree in physics in 1983 and a Masters in Engineering from Stanford University. In 1985 she received a master's degree in astronomy from the University of California. In 1988 she received a PhD in Space Physics and Astronomy at Rice University.

After her studies at Stanford Jernigan inquired from June 1981 to July 1985 as a researcher at the Ames Research Center of NASA. Jernigan applied unsuccessfully for the 10th astronaut group of NASA. In June 1985, she was by NASA astronauts as a trainee with the 11 group is selected and then trained to mission specialist.

STS -40

Your first space missions had Jernigan at the mission STS -40 on the Space Shuttle Columbia. This mission was postponed several times because of the space shuttle various defects had occurred. The launch took place finally on June 5, 1991. It was the fifth Spacelab mission, the first devoted entirely to life sciences. The main experiment was Spacelab Life Sciences -1. In this physiological studies in humans, performed 30 rodents and thousands of tiny jellyfish. Of the 18 studies were undertaken with ten people, seven rodents and one with the jellyfish.

STS -52

On 22 October 1992 aboard the space shuttle Columbia Jernigan on mission STS - 52. Takeoff and landing were at the Kennedy Space Center. The Italian Laser Geodynamic Satellite ( LAGEOS ) was exposed, which is able to measure movements of the earth's crust.

STS -67

On their third space mission Jernigan flew on 2 March 1995 on the Space Shuttle Endeavour into space. It was the second flight of the Astro observatory with three Ultra-Violet telescopes on board. The flight lasted 16 days and ended with a landing on 18 March 1995 at the Edwards Air Force Base in California.

STS -80

On 19 November 1996 Jernigan flew into space again. Only eight hours after the start of STS- 80, sponsored by Germany Astronomy platform ORFEUS -SPAS was suspended. For two weeks, they observed stellar objects. Students in the Federal Republic were able to be the internet. At the beginning of the fourth flight day, the plate-shaped WSF was suspended. For three days, the WSF flew alongside the Columbia. They produced in their " slipstream " a particularly pure vacuum, by granted all the molecules of the residual atmosphere of the way. On the rear side of the WSF new semiconductor for the electronics generated. Two spacewalks (EVA ) of Jernigan had to be canceled because the air lock would not open. The longest shuttle flight went almost 18 days to an end.

STS -96

On 27 May 1999 Jernigan flew with the Discovery to the International Space Station (ISS). In preparation for the first crew of the ISS four tons of supplies and components were brought to the space station. In a spacewalk, Jernigan and Daniel Barry mounted at 7 hours and 55 minutes, including two cranes ( Strela or ORU ) that were needed for moving heavy loads in the expansion of the station.

In September 2001, Jernigan retired from NASA and joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Northern California.

Tamara Jernigan is married to astronaut Peter Wisoff since 1999.
