Tancred of Bologna

Tancred of Bologna (* around 1185 in Bologna, † 1234/1236 same place ) was a medieval jurist. He is considered the greatest canonist of the 13th century.

Tancred studied in Bologna canon law at Lawrence Hispanus and John Galensis and Roman law in azo. By no later than 1214, he was himself a teacher of law in Bologna. He was highly regarded by his colleagues and had the confidence of the Roman Curia. Tancred wrote the Glossa ordinaria to Compilationes I, II (both from 1210 to 1215, revised after 1220 ) and III (after 1220 ) the Quinque Compilationes Antiquae. 1226 he presented on behalf of Pope Honorius III. the Compilatio V together. His Ordo iudiciarius, a representation of the judiciary and the Ecclesiastical Law and the civil proceedings, was the basis of all later works on this subject.
