T’Andernaken

T'Andernaken, al op den Rijn (also: Tandernaken, al op den Rijn ) was once a very famous folk song in Western and Southern Europe, originally written in Middle Dutch. It's about the conversation between two girls who are overheard in Andernach on the Rhine during their very personal conversation from one of the two lovers.

As most complete version is found the song in Antwerps Liedboek - Een schoon liedekens Boeck ( Antwerp Songbook - a beautiful Liedchenbuch ) of 1544 under the number 149 as Een Oudt liedeken ( An old song ).

The melody of the song survived the times as monophonic polyphonic sources, but the secular song text is known only from text sources. T'Andernaken was an internationally well-known song in the period from the 1430s to the 1540s, handed in (medium ) Dutch, Italian, German and English sources of Dutch, German and English Renaissance composer, each with its own (Instrumental) mountings as Ludwig Senfl ( 1534), Erasmus Lapicida ( 1504), Jacob Obrecht (1501 ), Pierre de la Rue (1500 ), Alexander Agricola, Antoine Brumel, Paul and Peter Hofhaimer Alamire. Even the musical English King Henry VIII verfertigte a variation of it ( ~ 1515) ..
