Taninges

Taninges is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the capital of the canton in the Arrondissement Taninges Bonneville.

Geography

Taninges is on 644 m above sea level. M., north of Cluses, located about 35 km east-southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on the northern edge of the wide valley of Giffre both sides of the Foron that reaches the valley floor here in the Savoy Alps at the southern foot of the Pointe de Marcelly, in Faucigny.

The area of ​​42.66 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Savoy Alps. The southern boundary runs along the Giffre, a right tributary of the Arve, which here flows in a wide and largely natural gravel from east to west. From the river, the municipality's area extends northward over the flood plain and almost 2 km wide floodplain. The northern part of the municipality covers large parts of the catchment area of the village Bach Foron in a strong in relief area in the Chablais Alps. Neighboring communities of Taninges are La Côte- d'Arbroz and Les Gets in the north, Verchaix in the east, La Rivière- Enverse and Châtillon -sur -Cluses in the south and in the west Mieussy.

History

Is first mentioned in 1263 under the name Taninges Taningis. The village developed alongside the 1285 founded by Beatrix de Faucigny Charterhouse Mélan. In the Middle Ages Taninges belonged to the rule Faucigny. As part of the Dauphiné reached the place in 1349 in France, but was delivered in a country Abtausch to the Counts of Savoy under the Treaty of Paris in 1355. Then Taninges shared the fate of Savoy. The early fortified town received liberties in the 15th century.

Attractions

Taninges has an interesting old town with town houses in the typical Savoyard style from the 17th to 19th centuries. The church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste was built in 1826-1834 in the style of neoclassicism. The bridge over the village stream Foron and the chapel Sainte -Anne from the late 16th century. In the plain south-east of the town center is the former Carthusian monastery Mélan. It fell victim to a fire in 1967, the church and the cloister were spared a majority. The buildings of the monastery church dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, while the cloister was built in 1530 in late gothic style.

In the hamlets outside Taninges there are several chapels, of which the one ( in the Gothic style in the 13th century ) are to be mentioned in the 17th century in Le Praz -de- Lys particularly in Flérier and the Chapel of Saint -Jacques.

Population

With 3381 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Taninges belongs to the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the late 1960s, a substantial population increase was recorded thanks to the beautiful residential area. On promising southern slope above the village of numerous single-family homes were built.

Economy and infrastructure

Taninges was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by the agriculture and forestry village. Today there are various companies of small and medium enterprises. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work. In recent decades, Le Praz -de- Lys has developed on the plateau together with the adjacent Sommant (municipality Mieussy ) has become an important tourist destination, which in the municipality hired a significant economic upturn. Le Praz -de- Lys is specialized in both the summer tourism as well as on winter tourism ( several mountain railways and ski lifts).

The village region has a quite well developed. It lies on the intersection of the main road D907 ( from Annemasse to Samoëns ) with the D902, which goes from Cluses via Morzine to Thonon -les- Bains. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of around 12 km.
