As a tank container is referred to in general container for storage and transport of liquid and gaseous products ( bulk ).

The most common tank containers meet in their outer dimensions are the ISO container and can therefore be used also for combined transport ( ie road, rail and sea ).

There are both tank container for chemicals / dangerous goods transportation as well as for food transport, the latter, such as road tanker trucks, must be marked with the word " only for food / Produits alimentaires / Foodstuff only" to avoid errors.

In general, tank container with baffles (one or more ) are equipped, which divide a tank chamber into two or more sections to counteract the swaying of the load ( the so-called surge ) effect in vehicle movements, such as starting or braking maneuvers. In addition, such containers shall be loaded to at least 80% in order not to be compromised by the surge effect.
