Tantalum ( V) chloride is a chemical compound from the group of tantalum compounds and chlorides.
Production and representation
Tantalum ( V) chloride can be recovered directly from the elements.
Alternatively, the representation of tantalum ( V) oxide and thionyl chloride
Or tantalum ( V) oxide and carbon tetrachloride possible.
Properties
Tantalum ( V) chloride is a yellowish solid with pungent odor, which decomposes in water or in acid deposition of tantalum in concentrated hydrochloric acid. It has a monoclinic crystal structure with space group C2 / m (a = 1823 pm, b = 1776 pm, c = 586 pm, β = 90.6 °). The pure compound is colorless, the yellow color is usually stirred by an impurity of niobium ( V) chloride or tungsten chloride forth.
Use
Tantalum ( V) chloride is used as the chlorinating agent in organic synthesis.
