Tanumshede

Tanumshede is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and the historic province of Bohuslän.

The place in the community Tanum lies about 55 kilometers from Uddevalla.

History

The area around the site has been inhabited for a long time and is part of the Felsenritzungen Tanum, which in 1994 declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next to the church of the village are two rune stones Tanum from the time of the Germanic migrations. Later on a Thing place was built in the 17th century was added a rest house for travelers.

In addition to the Felsenritzungen Tanumshede is more recently known for the Tanum Teleport, a satellite station for calls to North America and later in the whole world. The plant in 1971 and, along with Denmark, Finland and Norway was built operated. Today it is part of TeliaSonera Group.
