Taqa (Arabic طاقة, DMG TAQA ) is a coastal city and an administrative district ( wilaya ) in the province of Dhofar in the south west of the Sultanate of Oman.

History

From pre-Islamic times still stand the ruins of the old Taqa, which is located approximately one kilometer west of today's settlement area.

Geography / Location / Access

The place Taqa lies on the main road No. 49, which runs from Salalah to Mirbat. Approx. 23 km east of Salalah is the entrance. The place is located directly on a white sandy beach and is lined with thousands of coconut trees and agricultural gardens.

The Wilaya Taqa is situated on a coastal strip between the Wilaya Salalah on the west and the wilaya of Mirbat on the eastern side. The County has two Niyabate: Madinat al Hagq and Jibjat.

Demography

The population in the county grew Taqa according to official data, in the years 2003 to 2008 average annual rate of 3.2 %, with the CAGR of national share much more increased by 2.2 % and the proportion of foreigners CAGR of 10.1 %. The figures in detail:

Economy

Main source of income of the villagers is fishing. Off the coast there are rich fishing grounds for the Indian Ölsardine ( Sardinella longiceps ). The sun-dried fish used as protein-rich animal feed. In addition, coconut trees are cultivated and grown vegetables. In the nearby quarries of the " Taqah stone" is ( it is made of sandstone and limestone ) degraded, which is used as a cheap building material for the entire region.

Attractions

  • Approx. 2 km after the western entrance to the village there is a mosque on the cemetery also Mazun al - Maschani, the mother of Sultan Qaboos, is buried. Under identical marble grave stones, an uncle and a grandfather of Sultan are buried there as well.
  • In the center is the Taqa Fort, which consists of a slightly higher weir and an underlying residence of the Wali. The buildings are about 250 years old. The house was opened after a complete restoration to the public in 1994. The weir has been restored and can be visited in December 2011.
  • In the summer months, the days of Charif, worth a trip to the nearby waterfall of Wadi Darbat which plunges almost 100 meters above the mighty cliffs in the depth of the lagoon Khor Rori. The lagoon is one of the most beautiful bays of the region.
  • Approx. 10 km east from the entrance is the archaeological site of Khor Rori ( = the ancient Sumhuram ), but this is not officially open to visitors. Khor Rori was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites on 4 July 1988.
  • Approx. 10 km to Taqa is possible to turn from the main road right to Ain Hamran. A source amidst the shade of coconut trees invites you to rest.
