Tarapur ( Marathi तारापुर, Tārāpur ) is a city in Maharashtra. It is located in Thane district and has about 38,000 inhabitants.

Geographical location

It is an industrial town located 45 km north of Virar on the Western Railway line of Mumbai. The nearest train station is in Boisar. You can get there via the National Highway NH -8 ( location about 20 Km away ).

Nuclear power station

The nuclear power plant at Tarapur ( TAPS short ( Tarapur Atomic Power Station) called ) houses two boiling water reactors with a capacity of 160 MW, the first built in Asia and two new CANDU reactors ( PHWR ) of 540 MW. The two heavy water reactors are the most powerful in India. They were completed seven months ahead of schedule and cost far less than previously calculated.

The older reactors were built by the American company Bechtel and GE, both new, the Indian companies, L & T and Gammon. The entire power plant is operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. Of personnel working in the power plant, lives in a residential complex, the TAPS Colony is called. This residential complex is fifteen minutes away from the train station in Boisar. He was also constructed by Bechtel to house both Indian and American employees. Because of the complex was also intended for American engineers and technicians, he has the appearance of a small American town with neat sidewalks, spacious houses, tennis courts and an outdoor pool. While Americans are long gone, the residential complex thrives still gorgeous.

Atomic repository

The repository Tarapur was commissioned in 1968. It is intended for low-and intermediate-level nuclear waste. It is of concern that it was applied very close to the surface.

Tarapur has a huge industrial site that is mainly drug manufacturers, company for specialty chemicals and steel mills houses. Even companies in the textile industry have settled there.

Infrastructure

As mentioned above, during the time in which the Americans were involved in the construction of the NPP, done a lot for the city Tarapur. Tarapur is also known for its good schools and hospitals. The streets are also well developed.
